INDEPENDENT LIVING CHOICES
About Independent Living Choices
Interested in living on your own? Community Living Cambridge can help. Independent Living Choices (ILC) offers people the opportunity to explore living on their own (or with a roommate) with support from CLC staff. There are two options for people looking for support living on their own.
CLC operates two groups geared toward independent living. In these two homes, the focus is on developing the skills required to live independently in a supported environment. The ILC team works with people living in these two homes on skills such as navigating transit and buying groceries and preparing meals.
How does ILC work?
The Independent Living Choices model is based on your wants, what’s available, and what’s attainable. The program aims to assist people to achieve self-determination skills and autonomy. A variety of support models are provided for people who require from minimum to enhanced assistance to live on their own.
I think I’m ready to live on my own
The very successful Stepping Out program includes a one-week stay in a CLC apartment partially staffed with direct support professionals. During the week, CLC staff will observe and assess the necessary skills to be successful on your own safely and independently. This assessment includes:
- budget and money management
- meal planning and preparation
- conflict resolution
- healthy life choices
- rights and responsibilities etc.
I want to live independently with help from Community Living Cambridge
Supported Living placements are funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS). When a vacancy arises in a supported living program, Community Living Cambridge receives the names of people from the Ministry. These names come from their list of those awaiting a supported living placement. If you or your loved one are interested in group home living at CLC, you should contact Developmental Services Ontario to determine if you are eligible and complete an application.
